Year 2016 collection. “All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.” Edgar Allan Poe
No, these are not tombs, chapels, religious places, nor do they represent religious worship symbols on its creation. They are Espigueiros (related to corn cobs in Portuguese language). These are storage places built in granite to specifically store corn cobs for the winter. Located in the heart of the National Park of Geres, Soajo and Lindoso villages are the towns who most have preserved these national treasures from a farming period where corn was the main food of supply to survive the harsh winters in these mountainous places located 1500 metres above sea level. Traditionally almost every family owned one espigueiro but it was not uncommon for poor families to share one and rich families to have more than one.
The National Park of Geres as a whole more than worth a visit but these villages must be on the map and no one will be disappointed!
